NYT Connections today (game #1140) - the answers

The answers to today's Connections, game #1140, are…
- YELLOW: SPANISH RELATIVES: ABUELA, HIJO, MADRE, PRIMO
- GREEN: START TO CRY, WITH "UP": CHOKE, MIST, TEAR, WELL
- BLUE: AFRICAN CURRENCIES: KWANZA, LEONE, NAIRA, RAND
- PURPLE: STRIP____: CLUB, MALL, POKER, STEAK
- My rating: Hard
- My score: Perfect
Well this was annoying. As I was submitting AFRICAN CURRENCIES I couldn’t help but think to myself “I bet this bit of knowledge is worth a purple”, but no.
Sadly, knowing that KWANZA is used in Angola, the RAND in South Africa, LEONE in Sierra Leone, and NAIRA in Nigeria was only worth a blue. So where was the purple?
The answer came in the form of, in my view, the far easier thread of STRIP____.
I ended without any mistakes on what felt like a tricky game, so I’m not that annoyed really.
Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Friday, July 24, 2026, game #1139)

- BLUE: BRING TO MIND, AS A MEMORY: JOG, PROMPT, REFRESH, SPARK
- PURPLE: HOMOPHONES OF RELIGIOUS ROLES: CANTER, FRYER, LLAMA, NONE
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.
It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.
It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
